The Patient Briefcase makes early discharge of patients with COPD and other chronic diseases possible. It makes it possible to move parts of the treatment from the hospital to the home of the patient. Thus the hospital releases beds, and the patient avoids a long submittance period.
The Patient Briefcase makes it possible for a patient to be attended and treated at home by a specialist doctor or nurse that is still at the hospital. You can connect the Patient Briefcase with different kinds of medico technical equipment that the doctor or nurse can read. The patient and the doctor/nurse can see and talk to each other via a screen and a built-in microphone. The patient and the doctor/nurse can thus experience the same personal contact as during the patient’s submittance but in the comfortable and secure conditions of the patient’s home.
Procedure
The patient is submitted to the hospital as usual but after a concluded prognosis and observation at a hospital, the patient is already discharged 24-36 hours later. Medisat installs the Patient Briefcase in the patient’s home, and we help the patient getting started. Then the very first consultation with the Patient Briefcase can begin.
The patient opens the briefcase, presses a button and obtains video contact with a doctor or a nurse. The patient and the doctor/nurse take the needed measurements together. The doctor/nurse reads the measurements directly in his system. After the procedure is over, typically after 7 – 10 days, Medisat will collect the Patient Briefcase. If the patient does not have an internet connection the briefcase will be delivered along with a satellite link..
The technical aspects
The Patient Briefcase is made up of two parts: a patient’s unit and a doctor’s unit.
The patient's unit is a purpose-built movable telemedical unit that makes live video conference and transmission of data from connected medico technical equipment possible. You can use the following technologies for the connection:
Cable connection: ADSL, etc.
Wireless connection: Clearwire, 3G, NMT, Satellite, etc.
The doctor’s unit is a purpose-built telemedical work station that consists of all the applications necessary for video consultation and collection of data from the patient’s unit. The technical solution is developed in such a way that almost every type of connection available can be used.
